Make Your Pup a Thanksgiving Treat

River Dog Bakery owners Brian and Pam Trainor took their love of dogs to the next level with their first golden retriever, Nicholas, who endured unfortunate allergies to common dog snacks. Unwilling to let Nick go without the treats he deserved, the Trainors created a slew of basic recipes for sugar-free and additive-free pies, cookies and other nibbles suitable for canines. Thus came the idea to open a bakery and offer their treats to four-legged friends in the community. For more than a decade, River Dog Bakery has been the place to go for healthy canine cookies and cakes.

Sweet Poochie Autumn Pies

Yield: 12 small pies

1 cup unbleached flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/8 cup vegetable oil
1/8 cup honey
1/8 cup water

1 cup sweet potato puree
1 egg
1/8 cup honey
1/8 cup water

In a food processor, combine flours, oil and honey. Mix until it resembles coarse meal. Add water until mixture forms a ball. Roll out dough on a floured surface to 1/8-inch thickness. Place in tart shell pans and smooth to edges.

In a separate bowl, mix remaining ingredients for filling until it resembles a thick paste. Spread into unbaked pie shells and garnish with dough pieces if desired.

Bake at 375 degrees F for 30-40 minutes, until filling is firm and crust is golden brown.
